What is cosmetic dentistry?

Cosmetic dentistry is an area of dentistry focused on improving the aesthetic value of one’s teeth, gums or bite – basically, your smile. Services under this umbrella include teeth whitening, teeth contouring, and veneers. While cosmetic dentistry doesn’t necessarily address the functionality of your teeth, the dental care experts in Madison at Total Care Dental do offer dental health services in addition to cosmetic dentistry.

Are there benefits to cosmetic dentistry?

The beautiful smile that comes with cosmetic dentistry grants increased self-confidence. This has a positive impact on one’s emotional well-being which, in turn, has positive effects on longevity and performance.

Why should I get my teeth professionally whitened?

There are over-the-counter teeth-whitening solutions available, but they do not have the same effect as professional whitening systems, may take weeks to prove effective, and can be overly complicated. The Madison cosmetic dentists at Total Care Dental use a deep-bleaching system that’s safe and fast-acting. In just two hours, you’ll see years’ worth of stains on your teeth disappear.

How many appointments will it take to get a beautiful smile?

The number of dental visits depends on the condition of your teeth and the cosmetic procedures required to correct your smile. For example, procedures like bonded veneers and teeth whitening can generally be completed in one visit, while porcelain veneers require two visits. If you treatment involves a combination of procedures, you’ll need more appointments.

What should I look for in a cosmetic dentist?

The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) recommends asking your dentist for before and after photos of other patients, references, and proof of continuing education. Total Care Dental is an accredited member of AACD and can answer any of your questions about our cosmetic dentistry services and qualifications.

Does insurance cover cosmetic dental procedures?

It depends on your dental coverage. The dental care experts at TCD are happy to look over your policy to maximize your benefits. If insurance doesn’t cover, or fully cover, your procedure we offer other payment options including CareCredit and standard payments like cash, personal check and major credit cards.

I lost a tooth. Should I have a cosmetic dental procedure?

When an adult tooth is lost due to injury or some other cause, your best option is our restorative dental implants rather than a cosmetic service. It is important to replace a lost tooth to prevent problems with the surrounding bone and muscles. Contact your Madison family dentist as soon as possible to find out if a dental implant is the right solution for you.

Do porcelain and bonded veneers stain?

Porcelain veneers are non-porous and more stain resistant than bonded veneers. Although bonded veneers are more prone to staining, they are less expensive and easier to replace.

Why are straight teeth important?

In addition to creating a beautiful smile, cosmetic dentistry also leads to better oral health, overall health, and emotional well-being. An improved smile boosts confidence and allows you to speak more clearly. Also, straight teeth are easier to clean, promoting oral health and reducing the risk of heart disease and gastrointestinal disease. A properly aligned bite helps avoid headaches, strain, and stress.

Does teeth whitening affect fillings, veneers, or crowns?

No. The whitener won’t enhance your smile if you have veneers, fillings, or crowns. It will only affect the surrounding teeth, making them whiter than the other material.

Is teeth whitening bad for enamel?

No. Studies show teeth whitening causes no permanent damage to enamel or other parts of the teeth. Our advanced whitening gels are safe, fast, and effective, without causing gum and tooth sensitivity.

How do I get started on cosmetic dentistry treatments?

The first step toward getting the beautiful smile you’ve always wanted is scheduling a free consultation with our Madison cosmetic dentists. We will discuss the condition of your teeth, the look you want to achieve, and the treatment options to give you the perfect smile.

How long do porcelain and bonded veneers last?

Porcelain veneers can last about 20 years with proper care, while bonded veneers generally last 5 to 10 years. Porcelain veneers cost more and are a worthwhile investment. Bonded veneers are easier to replace and cost about half as much as porcelain veneers.

How long does teeth whitening last?

Typically, you can expect teeth whitening results to last between six months and two years. Keep in mind, though, results vary by patient. Additionally, consuming red wine, coffee or cigarettes can adversely affect the length of the whitening.

How much do cosmetic dentistry procedures cost?

The cost of our cosmetic dental services depends on the difficulty of the procedure and the amount of time required. Creating the perfect smile for you may take a combination of treatments. The best way to get started and find out how much it will cost is to schedule a free consultation with our cosmetic dentists to discuss your needs and goals.

Is teeth contouring invasive or painful?

No, our aesthetic contouring process is painless. No anesthetic is needed for contouring teeth and only topical anesthetic is needed for laser gum contouring. Best of all, teeth contouring can be started and finished in as little as a single appointment.

What does the initial cosmetic dental consultation cover?

Our free consultation covers all the important points. First, a limited examination is done to understand your situation and digital photos of your smile and teeth are taken. An assessment of said photos is done, and treatment options are considered. Finally, a review of before-and-after photos of cases similar to yours and a treatment plan with its estimate are discussed.

What is the difference between bonded veneers and porcelain veneers?

There are a few differences between bonded and porcelain veneers. Bonded veneers are made of composite resin while porcelain veneers are made of dental porcelain. With bonded veneers, resin is sculpted and bonded directly onto your tooth, whereas porcelain veneers are sculpted before bonding. Because of this, bonded veneers are ideal for minor misalignments, chipping or discoloration. Porcelain veneers last longer and are used for severe damage or staining.

Can cosmetic dentistry address my crooked teeth?

Yes. TCD Madison offers Invisalign clear braces and tooth contouring services to fix crooked teeth. Because Invisalign braces are clear, no one will know you’re wearing them – there are no ugly metal wires involved. On average, Invisalign clear braces are worn for eight to twelve months. With tooth contouring (also called tooth reshaping), a single appointment may fix crooked teeth.

Are veneers my only option for a ‘smile makeover’?

No. While bonded or porcelain veneers are one option to improving your smile, they are not the only option. Each situation is different and TCD’s cosmetic dentists are qualified to give you a full list of choices- including teeth whitening, Invisalign clear braces, and teeth contouring- capable of providing you with a beautiful smile.

Are dentures just a cosmetic choice?

No, though they will improve the appearance of your mouth. Dentures restore your ability to properly chew food and speak correctly. They may also provide additional support to your face, keeping your cheeks and lips from appearing sunken in.

When you have a missing tooth, the alveolar bone where the tooth once was weakens. This eventually spreads to the bone beneath nearby, healthy teeth. This can eventually cause these teeth to also fall out.

How do Invisalign braces work?

Invisalign braces use thermoplastic aligners to correct the placement of your teeth by gently shifting them over the course of several months. Just like traditional metal braces, this is intended to straighten teeth and prevent crookedness.

Invisalign braces correct crooked, gapped, or crowded teeth along with over, under, open, and cross bites. They do not close gaps from missing teeth nor do they whiten teeth.

How does professional teeth whitening work?

The method our professionals choose to utilize in the teeth whitening process vary from case to case depending on the level and types of stains on your teeth. For most cases we choose to follow the route of a simple yet effective bleaching system which leaves teeth 8 shades whiter on average.

The best part is that the whole process can be done in one appointment, making multiple visits completely unnecessary. With proper oral hygiene, regular dental checkups, and overall care for your teeth the results of will last for years!

Our office will help you determine whether additional payment is necessary.
